remain in shadow. Mercury has almost no axial tilt. The Sun is lined up almost directly with Mercury's equator. This alignment means there are places in the bottoms of craters near the poles where the Sun never reaches. Water ice could exist on the planet in these places. These unique conditions make it possible for Mercury to have polar caps.
